Hello Kitty Goes to Space!
Hello Kitty's newest mission is in space! A miniature Hello Kitty figure is now orbiting around Earth in a satellite.
The figure is 1.5 inches, and is equipped with her signature red bow as well as a message board that will broadcast digital messages of up to 180 characters suggested by fans. The messages will appear in both English and Japanese.
"It can be a message that you want to send from space to someone special on Earth, or it can be something more general," said a spokesman Sanrio, the Japanese company that created Hello Kitty.
Hello Kitty was created in 1974, when her face appeared on a coin purse. Now, she is an emblem of all things adorable and an icon of Japanese popular culture. The project to send her to space is government-funded, and aims to encourage the involvement of private companies in space exploration and tourism.
