In recent years, genetic Engineering has cemented its status as one of the most exciting (and controversial) areas of modern science. The ability to potentially increase our intelligence, create designer babies, and cure diseases may sound like a win-win situation, but many scientists are wary of genetic engineering getting out of hand. Earlier this year, the White House called for a worldwide moratorium on the editing of the human genome stating "the full implications of such a step could not be known until a number of generations had inherited the genetic changes made - and choices made in one country could affect all of us."

But while the editing of the human genome is causing concern among various parties, genetic engineering is continuing to make massive strides in a number of other areas. Key to this progress is a technique known as CRISPR-CAS9 (just CRISPR to you and I), which allows scientists to modify specific portions of the gene of just about any species from plants to animals to humans.
