HBO and Zack Snyder in Discussions Over a Possible Watchmen TV Series
< >
Zack Snyder's Watchmen movie split the DC Comics fan base down the middle when it was released back in 2009, but if new reports are to be believed, the director is looking to take another stab at adapting the classic DC property. Collider are claiming that sources close to Snyder have revealed that talks are underway with HBO regarding the possibility of producing a new Watchmen TV show.

Set in an alternate 1980's era, Alan Moore's Watchmen is rightfully regarded as a DC Comics classic. Watchmen's world is one in which superheroes are a known entity, so much so that they have helped shape the outcomes of major global events such as the Vietnam War and Cold War. To say that Moore's original work was complex would be an understatement, and one of the biggest criticisms of Snyder's Watchmen movie was that it was unable to deal with the sprawling nature of its source material.

With this in mind, a TV adaptation (especially and HBO TV adaptation) appears to make perfect sense. Serializing the story would allow producers to give a more faithful and logical representation of the source material, easing those who have not read Moore's work into the complexities of this alternate reality. But is it too soon for Snyder to be taking another pop at this piece of comic book history? If it is to be another adaptation of the main Watchmen story then yes, it probably is too soon. But as Collider points out, there's ample source material on this property, and the 2012 prequel series 'Before Watchmen' could be ripe for the picking.

Featuring classic Watchmen characters like Comedian, Nite Owl, Dr. Manhattan, and Rorschach, this collection of stories would serve beautifully as an on-screen introduction to Moore's world. It could be that a potential Watchmen series blends both the 'Before Watchmen' and 'Watchmen' series into one, learning from past criticisms and easing viewers into the main storyline.

The report didn't provide any concrete details other than the fact that meetings have been held on the matter, but you have to think that if anyone can pull off a Watchmen TV show it's the people who have taken on sprawling literary universes such as Game of Thrones and Asimov's Foundation. Tread carefully HBO.
