Doctor Who's Gugu Mbatha-Raw Cast in Star Wars: Episode VIII
ColliderThe Star Wars universe has just welcomed a new member, as Doctor Who and Jupiter Ascending actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw is in talks for a role in Star Wars: Episode VIII.

No details have been released on the nature of her role, so it's unclear whether Mbatha-Raw will play the new female lead that was previously being eyed by Tatiana Maslany, Gina Rodriguez, and Olivia Cooke, which was reported to be a possible love interest for John Boyega's character, Finn. There were also rumors that there are two major female roles being cast for the film, and Mbatha-Raw was in running for the other. We hope that's true, both because we could always use more female roles and because it would be disappointing if Maslany lost out on another Star Wars role.

But regardless, Mbatha-Raw is a great choice, as she is an incredibly talented actress and will add more diversity to the franchise. She has earned rave reviews for her breakout performances in both Beyond the Lights and Belle, and will soon be seen in the NFL drama Concussion and the live-action Beauty and the Beast.
