Everything We Learned About 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' From the New Official Poster
< >
Yesterday, LucasFilm continued their trend of creating some of the most beautiful theatrical posters in the movie industry.  Following on from Struzan's D23 poster this new piece for Star Wars: The Force Awakens was a breath of fresh air, but it doesn't just look good, it also provides a ton of hints about what we can expect when JJ Abrams' movie hits theaters on December 18th. Here are all of our knee-jerk reactions to this beautiful piece of artwork.

1. Starkiller Base

Yes, that might look remarkably like a Death Star, but we believe it might just be the First Order's Starkiller base, which is a very different beast to its predecessor. If this is indeed the Starkiller Base that JJ Abrams teased at San Diego Comic Con, it's going to be bigger, badder and far more scary than anything Palpatine and Tarkin concocted....

2. Learning from Mistakes

As mentioned above, the Starkiller Base is not merely Death Star #3, but it may be a love letter to the Empire's glory days. We know that the First Order is using Palpatine's Empire as the blueprint for a new era of evil, and after mimicking the old regime's Stormtroopers, it only makes sense that they double down by copying another hallmark of Palpatine's reign.

The First Order have constructed their Starkiller Base from an entire Ice Planet, which means we can expect it to be far bigger than any moon-sized Death Star. It also has a weapon that ups the ante from its Imperial predecessor, allowing Starkiller to destroy an entire star system. Crucially, it looks like they've learnt from another Imperial mistake and put a particle field over the pesky trench that was so easily exploited by the Rebels.

3. Everybody Loves Rey-(mond)

If you doubted that Daisy Ridley's Rey was going to be the key character in this new trilogy, Drew Struzan is here to eradicate any uncertainty. Rey is front and center of the artwork, with the movie's figurehead/villain Kylo Ren looming over her.

4. Light v Dark

Obviously this poster is all about the Light versus the Dark, but we can't help but notice that Rey is caught mysteriously between the two. The alignment of her staff with Kylo Ren's Lightsaber and the fact that she is facing the opposite direction to the rest of the Light side characters could suggest that The Force Awakens will see a battle for Rey's soul, with Ridley's character having to make the choice that is central to so much of Star Wars lore. Or, we could just be reading way too much into this.

5. Still no Snoke

Kylo Ren and Captain Phasma may be representing for the Dark Side, but there are still no shots of Andy Serkis's Supreme Leader Snoke, who is widely expected to be a major role in a new era of Star Wars villainy. Also absent from team Dark Side is General Hux, who will be played by Domhnall Gleeson.

6. Is this Maz Kanata?

In the Vanity Fair images that emerged back in May, Lupita Nyong'o was pictured with motion capture sensors all over her face. The actress has since been confirmed to be playing an alien character called Maz Kanata, and what should we see on this new poster? A new alien character! Obviously we can't confirm this will be Nyong'o's character, but it would certainly seem a good bet.

7. Conspicuous in Absence

Ok, the anticipation of seeing Luke Skywalker in this movie is almost too much. The hero of George Lucas's original trilogy was teased in the April trailer, but since then we've not seen anything but a grainy leaked image of the powerful Jedi, and he remains conspicuously absent from this new piece of artwork. Such is the level of anticipation around seeing Skywalker, people are starting to go as far as to suggest he's actually the many behind Kylo Ren's mask....Madness! It's so nice to still have genuine intrigue going into a major movie like this....I just hope that intrigue remains beyond tonight's trailer release.

Don't forget, there's a new trailer coming tonight at some point during ESPN's Monday Night Football, but if you can't wait, check out these teasers for the trailer....
