Duracell's Star Wars: The Force Awakens Commercial Did Not Just Drop a Major Spoiler, Did it?
Love it or hate it, merchandising is almost as big a part of the Star Wars universe as the characters that live within it. Ever since George Lucas's first movies were released, retailers and product creators have gone out of their way to link their wares to the greatest franchise in sci-fi history. Some of the tie-ins are tenuous at best (Star Wars Male-Up, anybody), but there's one area that always delivers when it comes to Star Wars marketing, and that's Toys.

From this Kenner Star Wars cantina (note that Han shoots first)....

....To these Lego sets for The Phantom Menace

Toy commercials always captured the excitement of the Star Wars universe. This year looks like it will continue that trend, with Duracell featuring Lightsabers in a commercial that is so well put together that it's hard not feel like a kid when you watch it.

Other than the slightly worrying vigour with which those kids were mowing down Stormtroopers, this is a really cute commercial that perfectly captures the magic we've all felt while playing with Star Wars toys. But is the commercial playing with our heads? Note that the girl dressed as Rey uses the force to push those troopers away, and then ends up wielding Luke Skywalker's Return of the Jedi Lightsaber....yeah we're definitely reading too much into this. It's highly unlikely that Duracell would have received advanced word on the finer plot details of JJ Abrams' movie, but if it does turn out that Rey is Luke Skywalker's force-sensitive daughter, we'll be kicking ourselves that we didn't make a bigger deal of this.

Let's all just remind ourselves of this mantra. "Commercials are NOT canon. Commercials are NOT canon."
