Snowpiercer fans may never get the sequel they were clamoring for, but now they might be getting something even better. The critically acclaimed Korean sci-fi film is now being adapted for television by Josh Friedman, best known for creating Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles and writing the 2005 version of War of the Worlds.

Snowpiercer, which was based on the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige (and was also sort of a better version of Elysium), took place in a post-apocalyptic Ice Age in which the few surviving humans live in a train that circles the Earth. Their small society becomes extremely stratified according to class, where the elites live in the luxurious front cars and the "scum" live in squalid conditions in the back cars. The film, which starred Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton, was almost universally acclaimed, and made many top ten lists when it came out in the US in 2014.

The premise lends itself to expansive storytelling, so this news is exciting on its own, but the project also has an incredible amount of talent already signed on. Snowpiercer director Bong Joon Ho is set to executive produce, along with Oldboy director Park Chan-wook, who produced the original film and is considered to be one of the most acclaimed filmmakers to hail from South Korea.

And then there's Friedman, who, in addition to TSCC and War of the Worlds, is known for co-creating the pilot for Joe Hill's acclaimed graphic novel Locke and Key and recently signed on to co-write Avatar 2 with James Cameron.
Opening quote
"I'm a huge fan of director Bong's films, especially Snowpiercer," said Friedman. "It's great the way the best sci-fi is great - thoughtful, political, funny, scary and sly. And it's on a train. A big f-ing train. What more could you want?"
