A Prequel to Frank Miller’s ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ is Coming in February 2016
Everyone's been super excited about the third and final installment in Frank Miller's Dark Knight trilogy entitled 'The Dark Knight III: The Master Race,' but now it looks like the long anticipated conclusion to Frank Miller's story won't be the only addition to his Dark Knight universe. It's official: The Dark Knight Returns is getting a one-shot prequel comic in early 2016.

The story is being called 'Dark Knight Returns: The Last Cursade' and will be written by the same creative team behind TDK III - Frank Miller and Brian Azzarello. Likewise, the talented John Romita, Jr. will be taking on the pencils for the issue as well.

According to Romita, the story will be centered around the time in the Dark Knight universe when Jason Todd was Batman's current Robin. Evidently, it will tell the tale of how he suffered at the hands of the Joker, making this the DK equivalent of the 'Death in the Family' story arc. This will also mark the only other time the Joker has appeared in the Dark Knight universe after his death in the original 1986 story.

It's interesting to see how the release of both 'The Last Crusade' and 'The Master Race' line up with the premiere of Batman v Superman. It's no secret that the film draws heavily from TDKR, so having a similar iteration of Batman on the shelves at the time that the film drops is definitely a smart marketing move. It's also interesting that the story will be dealing with the death of Jason Todd, as the trailer for Batman v Superman made it quite clear that the character's death will play just as large of a role in the cinematic Batman's history as it does in the comic.

Frank Miller's return to the Dark Knight trilogy is definitely one of the biggest things to take place in the world of comics this year. Hearing that he'll also be bringing fans the earliest story in the Dark Knight universe as of yet featuring one of the most defining moments in the Batman mythos? That's just icing on the cake.

'Dark Knight Returns: The Last Crusade' hits stores on February 17th, 2016.
