Science Fiction Dominates IMDB's List of Top 10 Movies and TV Shows for 2015
< >
There's still a month to go before the year is out, but that hasn't stopped IMDB from releasing their annual top 10 lists for movies and TV shows.

2015 has been an up-and-down year at the box office, and no genre has witnessed that trend more significantly than Science Fiction. With major disappointments like Terminator: Genisys, Tomorrowland and Fantastic Four being contrasted by serious highs like Ex-Machina, The Martian and Mad Max: Fury Road, you'd have to say that, on balance, it's been a pretty good year for sci-fi fans. That's a sentiment that appears to be supported by IMDB's Top 10 movies list, which takes into account user ratings to give us the best received movies of the year. As you can see from the list below, Sci-Fi and Comic Book movies dominate the list with Mad Max: Fury Road and Ridley Scott's The Martian taking the 2nd and 3rd spots, just behind Pixar's wonderful animated adventure, Inside Out.

1. "Inside Out"
2. "Mad Max: Fury Road"
3. "The Martian"
4. "Straight Outta Compton"
5. "Sicario"
6. "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl"
7. "Kingsman: The Secret Service"
8. "Ex Machina"
9. "Ant-Man"
10. "Avengers: Age of Ultron"

It is slightly surprising to see Age of Ultron on the list, especially given the lukewarm reception Whedon's sequel was given by large numbers of fans. That being said, it was one of the biggest movies of the year, trailing only to Jurassic World. Speaking of which, where is this year's box office record holder on this list?

TV has, on the whole, been a far more positive year for fans of sci-fi and geek culture. The year's runaway hit, The Flash, is still going strong in its second season, while The Walking Dead continues to bring in mind-boggling numbers of viewers. But not even AMC's Zombie drama could come close to touching HBO's fantasy epic, Game of Thrones.

1. "Game of Thrones"
2. "The Walking Dead"
3. "Arrow"
4. "Daredevil"
5. "Narcos"
6. "American Horror Story"
7. "Orange Is the New Black"
8. "Fear the Walking Dead"
9. "True Detective"
10. "The Flash"

Given how popular The Flash has been this year, it's somewhat to see it only making it to 10th place on the list, especially seeing as it's sibling show, Arrow made it to 3rd place despite experience something of a dip in form for much of the year.

IMDB do like to keep the calculations behind their ratings a bit of a mystery, and there's certainly plenty of questions raised by these rankings. Still, when geek culture is represented so strongly, you won't find us complaining too much!
