Everything You Need to Know About the Doctor Who Christmas Special
After that huge twist in this weekend's "Heaven Sent," we have no idea what to expect from this week's finale, "Hell Bent." But we have a feeling it's going to be explosive, so it will be nice to come down a little bit for the Christmas special, which will feature the return of a fan favorite.

River Song

The Christmas special, called "The Husbands of River Song," will focus heavily on the return of beloved companion River Song, played by the wonderful Alex Kingston.

Opening quote
"Another Christmas, another special for Doctor Who - and what could be more special than the return of Alex Kingston as Professor River Song," said showrunner Steven Moffat when the news was announced. "The last time the Doctor saw her she was a ghost. The first time he met her, she died. So how can he be seeing her again? As ever, with the most complicated relationship in the universe, it's a matter of time …"
Closing quote

River Song was a companion and love interest for Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor. She was widely praised as an example of a strong female character on a science fiction show, and was often characterized as the Doctor's "soulmate." The daughter of two companions, River was born with time travelling abilities as a result of being conceived on the TARDIS, and so her meetings with the Doctor are out of synchronization. The first time he met her, for example, it was his first meeting and her last, creating a Benjamin Button type of relationship. It's unclear whether she and the Twelfth Doctor have met before in the timeline, but rumor has it that this is their first-ever meeting.

Official synopsis

Here's the official synopsis from BBC:

Opening quote
"It's Christmas Day on a remote human colony and the Doctor is hiding from Christmas Carols and Comedy Antlers. But when a crashed spaceship calls upon the Doctor for help, he finds himself recruited into River Song's squad and hurled into a fast and frantic chase across the galaxy.

King Hydroflax (Greg Davies) is furious, and his giant Robot bodyguard is out-of-control and coming for them all! Will Nardole (Matt Lucas) survive? And when will River Song work out who the Doctor is?

All will be revealed on a starliner full of galactic super-villains and a destination the Doctor has been avoiding for a very long time."
Closing quote

Sonic Screwdriver

I'm not sure whether we can say that the 12th Doctor has been "good" this year, but in any case, Santa Claus brought him (and us) a gift: a new sonic screwdriver, seen in the picture above with River and a mystery villain.
