Tom Holland Is "Stealing" from Both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield for Spider-Man Role

Many comic book movie actors have other versions of their characters to contend with, but Tom Holland's situation is somewhat unique in that he has not one, but two competing performances as Spider-Man from the last ten years alone. But the 19-year-old seems to take it in stride, as he told Variety at the premiere of his latest film, In the Heart of the Sea, that he will take inspiration from both performances for his iteration of the classic character.

Opening quote
"The only difference I'm going to tell you is that I'm way younger, and at the moment, there's going to be both things from Tobey [Maguire] and Andrew's [Garfield] character that I'm going to steal," said Holland. "But there's one very specific path that [director] Jon [Watts] and I agree on and we'd like to take the character down and explore his background."

He was equally diplomatic when discussing the fan backlash against his casting, generally as a result of his age:

Opening quote
"Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and it just gives me more motivation to prove them wrong when I do start shooting the movie," Holland said. "And hopefully I will and it would be good fun."

Personally, I think Holland seems great for the role. It's certainly not his fault that he's our third Peter Parker in a decade (why couldn't they just do Miles Morales, for God's sake?), and although I really liked Andrew Garfield's version, Holland is so much younger that it might not be too much of a retread. As long as we don't see Uncle Ben die again, I'm sure it will be fine.

And, at the very least, he takes the responsibility of playing the role seriously, as evidenced by his cutely earnest description of his reaction to getting the part:

Opening quote
"I auditioned and waited and waited for months. When I got the call that I received the part, there was a lot of screaming. My whole family and I were screaming and we were so excited," he said. "My poor dog Tess was scared from all the jumping and screaming. It was one of the happiest days of my life. I'm still very happy. Sometimes I have to pinch myself and ask, 'Do I really have the honor to play Spider-Man? Am I dreaming?'"
Closing quote

Tom Holland's Spider-Man will first be seen in Captain America: Civil War next May, and then in his own solo movie on July 28, 2017.
