J.J. Abrams Explains Why Leia Isn't a Jedi
"The Force is strong in my family. My father has it. I have it. My sister has it." Luke Skywalker said these words to Princess Leia in Return of the Jedi, confirming that she, too, had the power to become a Jedi. But in The Force Awakens, 30 years later, she isn't one. So why not? Who wouldn't want to choke people from across a room and use a lightsaber?

Director and co-writer J.J. Abrams answered that question when asked by IGN, and here's what he had to say, cleaned up for clarity:

Opening quote
"It's funny because in talking about this, even with George Lucas, the question of at what age can someone learn the Force and become a Jedi, I would like to think that there isn't really much of a ticking clock and it's never too late. But [the question about Leia] was a great question and one that we talked about quite a bit, even with Carrie [Fisher]. If [Leia] was another [potential Jedi], then why did she not take advantage of her natural Force strength? And one of the answers was it was simply a choice that she made, that her decision to run the Rebellion, and ultimately this Resistance, and consider herself a general as opposed to a Jedi, it was simply a choice that she took. Not that there was any regret that she could have [become a Jedi] and didn't, but clearly we've seen and we do again, that she's still Force strong, and it's something that I think is an intrinsic piece of her character. "
Closing quote

So there you go. Leia could be a Jedi, she just doesn't want to because she thinks generals are cooler. It could very well be that, due to her leadership position in the Rebellion and the Resistance, that she thought developing her use of the Force was too risky, as she may succumb to the Dark Side. Ultimately, we'll have to wait for The Force Awakens to see what Abrams means when he says we'll see that she's Force strong, but maybe we'll get to see her choke a guy from across the room yet.
