Star Wars Breaks Record for Thursday Ticket Sales, On Track to Break More Records Before the Weekend is Up
It's no surprise that Star Wars Episode VII is poised to have one of the greatest opening weekends in history. It's one of the most popular (if not the most popular) cinematic franchises ever, and the fact that Luke, Leia, and Han have all come back for another story about a galaxy far, far away 33 years after their last time together on the big screen is perhaps one of the most momentous cinematic events of all time. It already broke the record for pre-sales, and now it's taken the record for Thursday sales as well.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens took home $57 million in Thursday ticket sales alone, beating out the final installment in the Harry Potter film series, which has held the record since 2011. If that wasn't enough, early estimates show that The Force Awakens will likely make over $100 million tonight alone, making it the only movie to break a hundred mill in one day - ever.

The executives over at Disney have given an estimate (and a rather conservative one at that) of $200 million for the entire opening weekend. Which means that its looking more and more likely that Star Wars Episode VII will break the record for highest grossing opening weekend of all time, which was just broken this year by Jurassic World at $208 million.

Star Wars is certainly a film series that has meant a whole lot to a whole lot of people for a whole long time. Episode VII has promised to deliver the movie fans have deserved after the almost universally agreed failures of the prequels, and in this author's opinion, it has done just that. Catch Star Wars Episode VII in theaters now.
