Universal Congratulates Star Wars: The Force Awakens for Victory Over Jurassic World
Star Wars: The Force Awakens just shattered box office records this weekend, to no one's surprise. This also means that it's unseated Jurassic World as the reigning champion, and Jurassic World producer Frank Marshall showed a nice display of sportsmanship:

This is very sweet, and not just because Marshall is Kennedy's husband and frequent collaborator. He celebrates Star Wars opening to $528 million overall, beating Jurassic World's previous record-setting opening weekend box office of $524.9 million. At $281 million, it technically only had the number three international opening of all time, behind Jurassic World ($316 million) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ($314 million). But unlike those two movies, Star Wars hasn't come out in China yet (it opens on January 9), which would have inflated its numbers significantly. Jurassic World's international opening, for example, includes $99 million from China.

The Force Awakens also beat the previous Monday opening record; it earned $40.1 million last night in North America, absolutely blowing away Spider-Man 2's record of $27.7 million. It seems safe to say at this point that there will be new records broken by Star Wars every single day until the end of its run, when it's predicted to be at least the third highest-grossing movie of all time (beating Jurassic World again).

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is now out in theaters.
