Star Wars: The Force Awakens Is Already the 15th Highest-Grossing Movie of All Time
Star Wars: The Force Awakens may be on track to be the highest-grossing movie of all time. After only two weekends in the theaters, it is already the 15th highest-grossing movie ever, crossing the $1 billion mark in record time.

The Force Awakens hit the $1 billion mark in only 12 days, beating Jurassic World's previous record of 13 days. But this victory isn't quite as narrow as it sounds, considering that Jurassic World had already opened in China, the second-highest movie market in the world, while The Force Awakens doesn't open in China until January 9.

Similarly, the Star Wars sequel is already the 15th highest-grossing movie ever, but would probably be considerably higher if it had opened in China. It's already in the top 10 in the U.K., for example, where it has only been playing in theaters for 10 days, beating out huge tentpoles like The Hobbit, Pirates of the Caribbean, Dark Knight and all but two Harry Potter films.

The Force Awakens has been breaking records ever since tickets went on pre-sale, achieving the biggest opening weekend of all time in many different territories, including the U.S., New Zealand, Australia, and countries throughout Europe.

Opening quote
"You almost have to rewrite all the record books for this movie," box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian of Rentrak told AP. "It's absolutely mind-blowing that 'Star Wars' could get to a billion dollars in 12 days and it hasn't even opened in China, the second biggest movie market in the world."
