Awesome Star Wars Fan Theory Explains How Kylo Ren Has Darth Vader's Helmet in The Force Awakens
Spoilers for Star Wars: The Force Awakens ahead!
Star Wars: The Force Awakens was amazing, but left us with a few burning questions, not the least of which is how Kylo Ren ended up with Darth Vader's burned-out helmet. According to one fan theory from Star Wars Minute, the answer lies not in the movie, and maybe not even in any of the upcoming movies, but in the newly rebooted expanded universe.
The last time we saw Vader's helmet, it was burning on a funeral pyre in Return of the Jedi, so how did it end up in the hands of Vader's wayward grandchild? According to the above video, this question may have been answered by "The Perfect Weapon," a Star Wars canonical short story published in November as a tie-in with The Force Awakens.
In the story, Bazine Netal, the humanoid who betrayed Finn and Rey to the First Order in Maz Kanata's castle is hired to retrieve a package with unknown contents from the room of a Stormtrooper who fought in the Battle of Endor. Although far from confirmed, it's reasonable to assume it's possible that this package was Darth Vader's helmet. We technically have no idea who Netal's mysterious benefactor is, but considering Kylo Ren's deep love of Vader, we wouldn't put it past him to hire a mercenary to fetch it.
