Will Smith Talks Captain Hiller’s Death In Independence Day: Resurgence
The first trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence was released about a month ago now, but of course the hero from the original film, Captain Steven Hiller, remained unseen. As was reported beforehand, the official website stated that Hiller had apparently died during a test flight gone wrong. Now, Smith has recently given his thought on Hiller's death in an interview with Yahoo about his upcoming movie, Concussion:

Opening quote
"I was working on Suicide Squad during that time," he said, referring to the film's production. "[Independence Day director] Roland [Emmerich] and I had talked about it. The trailer looks really cool. I'm going to be sitting around with tears in my eyes when that one comes out… It was terrible when I found out my character died."
Closing quote

While fans probably feel pretty terrible about the fact that Hiller's dead too, his role as Deadshot in DC's upcoming Suicide Squad could be one of his biggest yet - and that's saying a lot, considering his résumé. Certainly, Resurgence would probably have fared a lot better with Smith in the cast, but nostalgia may yet be able to bear the burden created by Smith's absence. And who knows? If Resurgence plays its cards right, it might just be able to rival the success of its predecessor.
