Fan Poll: Which is the Best Star Wars Movie So Far?
The dust is finally settling from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and with the seventh entry into the Star Wars saga smashing box office records with all the vigour of an angry Kylo Ren, it's safe to assume that most people have now seen JJ Abrams' effort. That means it's now a suitable time to ask the fans which of the seven Star Wars movies is sitting atop their personal best of lists. Did The Force Awakens do enough to dethrone your previous favorite, or are you still cherishing the childhood memories of the adventures on Hoth, Tatooine and....erm, Naboo? Let us know in the poll below:

The beauty of the Star Wars saga is that it's offered up many different types of movies, each of which appeals to a specific taste. While Star Wars: The Force Awakens went back to a formula most fans had all been craving, JJ Abrams was right in his response to the criticism he'd received over his movie being a rip-off.

Opening quote
It was obviously a wildly intentional thing that we go backwards, in some ways, to go forwards in the important ways. Ultimately the structure of Star Wars itself is as classic and tried and true as you can get.
Closing quote

Indeed, The Force Awakens did utilize a similar structure to that of A New Hope, but it did so while also bringing in new characters and worlds as well as adding depth to the characters that made the original trilogy a saga that has lasted for decades.

Abrams continued by saying that these formulaic elements are not the elements that matter when it comes to expanding on a saga like Star Wars.

Opening quote
The story of history repeating itself was - I believe - an obvious and intentional thing, and the structure of meeting a character who comes from a nowhere desert and discovers that she has a power within her, where the bad guys have a weapon that is destructive but that ends up being destroyed - those simple tenets are by far the least important aspects of this movie, and they provide bones that were well-proven long before they were used in Star Wars.
Closing quote

That being said, as much as I adored The Force Awakens, I'm not sure it did enough to work its way to the top of my personal list. For that, the excitement of the Battle of Hoth, the Jedi training on Dagobah and that "I am Your Father" moment all keep The Empire Strikes Back comfortably at the top. However, Empire took advantage of some serious storytelling foundations that were laid down by A New Hope, and if Star Wars: Episode VIII can do something similar, there's every chance that come 2017 we could be looking at a new all time champ. I love the new characters that have been added into the saga by this new group of storytellers. You really feel for Rey, Finn, Poe, and even Kylo, and that was simply not present in George Lucas's prequel trilogy. Truly, this is a time to be very excited about the future of Star Wars storytelling.
