This Interview With the Jar Jar Binks Actor Will Change How You View the Character
< >
Ask any Star Wars fans what made the prequels so bad, and the first words out of their mouths will almost always be: "Jar Jar Binks". The unlikable Gungan has been drawing the ire of fans for over 15 years now, and the release of The Force Awakens served as an opportunity to drag out the Jar Jar punching bag once again.

But Jar Jar Binks was portrayed by an actual human actor, believe it or not, and he is completely aware that everyone hates his character. Ahmed Best, AKA the man behind the Gungan, sat down for a YouTube interview with Star Wars fan Jamie Stangroom to talk about his experience voicing the role, and it might just change the way you view your least favorite character.

Here's what Best said about the backlash to his character:

Opening quote
"It didn't put me off Star Wars, but yeah, it was painful. It was painful. I mean, this character for me, one of the biggest reasons why I took it was because of the challenge of [motion capture acting], and it hadn't been done before ... so I was kind of working with George [Lucas] to pioneer this new character form of acting and storytelling. On set, we were all just so focused on the challenge of it and we were having so much fun that the post Star Wars [backlash] was kind of a surprise for us."
Closing quote

Best is also asked if he took the criticism personally, and he admitted that it was hard not to:

Opening quote
"[I took it] a little bit [personal]. Even though sometimes you play characters, you put a lot of your personality into it and you get emotionally and personally invested in the work that you do ... so when your work is criticized negatively, you feel a little bit of a hit."
Closing quote

And yes, Best even sympathizes with the fans who hate the character.

Opening quote
"When [the fans] see a character who's purely comical and purely for the children, they felt probably a bit condescended to, and I can understand how they wanted a more serious story."
Closing quote

Bet you feel like a bit of a jerk now, don't you? You can watch the entire interview below, which includes Best doing an impression of Liam Neeson in Taken using Jar Jar's voice! It's as amazing as it sounds.
