Crazy Star Wars Fan Theory Claims Rey is Reincarnated Anakin Skywalker, Jakku Is Purgatory
Spoilers for Star Wars: The Force Awakens ahead!
Star Wars: The Force Awakens left plenty of unanswered questions to be resolved in either future installments or the expanded universe: why did R2-D2 wake up at exactly the right time? Who is TR-8R and where did he get that awesome baton? But most of all, who is Rey? The movie heavily implied that she is Luke Skywalker's daughter, but never confirmed it, seemingly in order to delve further into her backstory in the sequels. So naturally, the internet is exploding with fan theories, each more outlandish than the next, but our favorite so far is that Rey is actually a reincarnated Anakin Skywalker, come to make amends for his sins, and that Jakku is literally purgatory.
We sincerely doubt that this theory, found on 9Gag, could possibly be true, but as with all fan theories, there is a surprising amount of evidence given. Some of the pieces of evidence are more convincing than others; Anakin was looking to cheat death in the original trilogy, and this would somewhat explain how she was so strong with the Force so quickly, which the filmmakers have assured fans is a "twist" rather than a "bug" in the mythology. But other pieces of evidence are, of course, extremely tenuous; the poster says that she looks like Shmi Skywalker, which 100% seems like a coincidence, as there's no way they would cast such an important role based on an obscure clue like that (although they may, to be fair, have been looking for a vague Natalie Portman/Keira Knightley lookalike). And the poster also relates that she was born right after Anakin's death, but that's just because she had to be born after the original trilogy, and making the character any younger than 20 would have been a very different dynamic.
Point being, this is almost definitely not true, but we'll put it under the "wouldn't it be cool if..." category:
