Star Wars Episode VIII Delayed for "Positive" Script Rewrites
For all of us who were sad to hear that Star Wars Episode VIII was delayed until December 2017" href="http://www.outerplaces.com/science-fiction/item/10977-star-wars-episode-viii-delayed-until-december-2017" target="_blank">Star Wars Episode VIII was delayed until December 2017, we may have spoken too soon. According to a new report, the movie has been delayed partially for the obvious reasons—the December release date was pretty lucrative for The Force Awakens—and partially for script rewrites. But not because the script is in trouble; on the contrary, these are reportedly "positive" changes based on the reaction to Force Awakens.

Opening quote
Obviously the December date worked out very (very) well for them but I've also heard they are rewriting the script," THR's Borys Kit revealed on Twitter. "I've heard from several sources the rewrites are positive, based on audience reaction to the new characters. People loved them. So strongly. And Lucasfilm was surprised at how well they were received, according to several sources.
Closing quote

Another source said essentially the same thing on the Meet the Movie Press Podcast (via The Mary Sue)

Opening quote
"I said before there were two young female roles, now I actually heard that the rewrite will make these roles smaller. They want to get to know better the characters they already have. So the new rewrite is shrinking the new roles in order to spend more time with Rey, Poe and so on."
Closing quote

We wholeheartedly support these changes if it means more time with Rey, Poe, and Finn (and hopefully Phasma?). Although it's always great to add more female characters, the cast is big enough as it is, and Rey has been the breakout character of The Force Awakens anyway, so making her an even more well-rounded character would still be a win. Plus, [spoiler!] was originally supposed to die in TFA, so it only makes sense that there would be significant rewrites. And as much as I love the old guard, their scenes were by far the most strained with the most cringe-worthy dialogue, so the more time spent with the new characters, the better.

Star Wars Episode VIII is set to open in theaters on December 15, 2017.
