Doctor Who May Bring in a New Time Lord After Season 10

Steven Moffat announced earlier this week that he would be leaving Doctor Who after season ten, handing over the reigns to Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall. According to a new report, BBC is considering an entirely new start, and bringing in a new actor to play the Doctor once Chibnall takes over.

Opening quote
"Bosses are already discussing a fresh start when Steven leaves," an industry source told The Mirror. "They've been happy with what Peter has brought to the role but some think it might make sense to give Chris his own choice of actor to play the Doctor. They hope he will be able to find someone who can have the same impact as Matt Smith did when Steven Moffat kicked off his run as executive producer."

When Russell T. Davies stepped down and Moffat took over seven years ago, David Tennant left along with him and was replaced with the Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith, who helped define the Moffat era and became both the youngest actor to play the Doctor and the first to be nominated for a BAFTA for the role. It's understandable that it might help kick off a new era to have a new doctor, but hopefully, if Capaldi leaves, it will be of its own accord. The actor is contracted for the 2017 series, but has already hinted that it might be his last:

Opening quote
"This could be my final year – it's terrifying," he said last month. "I love Doctor Who but it can be quite an insular world and I do want to do other things. There will come a time when this is over."
Closing quote

Doctor Who will return with a Christmas special in 2016, followed by Moffat's final 12 episodes in 2017.
