X-Files Fan Theory Claims the Mulder/Scully Relationship Is the Real Conspiracy
The X-Files is famous for its twisty, convoluted, sometimes nonsensical overarching conspiracy (which we tried our best to explain in this infographic) involving the Syndicate, alien hybrids, clones, super-soldiers, and bees, randomly. But according to an amazing—and actually pretty plausible—fan theory, the real conspiracy was actually the story behind the relationship between Mulder and Scully. We all thought that they had their first kiss in the seventh season, but the truth is out there—they were sleeping together the whole time.

Last year, The Hairpin put forth this theory, which claims that Mulder and Scully first had sex in the pilot, right after Scully disrobed for Mulder in a hotel room (it sounds pretty likely when you put it that way, right?).

Opening quote
Ok. You know in the pilot episode when Scully thinks she's been bitten by whatever thing they're in the middle of nowhere investigating? I could look this up but I'm kind of enjoying doing this by memory. ANYWAY, she thinks she's been bitten, and she knocks on Mulder's door, and she's wearing JUST A TRENCH COAT OVER HER BRA AND UNDERWEAR, and she SHOWS HIM JUST HER SHOULDER, and he TOUCHES THE BITE and SMILES and says "IT'S JUST A MOSQUITO BITE"? Like. I'm wet just remembering this.

Are you telling me that they DIDN'T immediately have "wow I'm not going to die and I'm so relieved" sex right then and there? And that they weren't kind of casually fucking every so often, which accounts for Scully's gentle exasperation in the face of Mulder's endearing but annoying paranoia? She just constantly has this expression of, like, "Ugh you're annoying the shit out of me right now but that D was so good last night that I'm just going to shake my head and let it go." Which is an expression I know well.

This theory is actually fairly plausible, considering that many details of their relationship were obscured for the entirety of the show's run. We never saw them consummate their relationship onscreen, for example, even though we know that Mulder is William's father, so they must have slept together at some point. We all assumed it started much later in the game, but considering that they spent all of their time together and never had any other serious relationships, maybe they were in some kind of mating ritual the entire time, and it just occurred offscreen.

I tend to doubt that this is actually canon, mostly because I've read that Chris Carter didn't even want Mulder and Scully to be a will-they won't-they couple at first. I always interpreted that disrobing scene in the pilot as the notoriously sexist network getting involved and insisting that Scully take her clothes off for some contrived reason, Alice Eve-style. However, I think it's a pretty reasonable interpretation if you're one of those people who doesn't think the author's intention means anything. Judging The X-Files by what was onscreen alone, it's much more realistic that two attractive, single people with palpable chemistry and an intellectual connection would have been doing it from the pilot episode. What else did they have to do at night when they were hunting mutants and Loch Ness monsters in the middle of nowhere?
