Elizabeth Banks to Play Rita Repulsa in the New Power Rangers Movie
< >
She's one of the Power Rangers' biggest foes and fans of the franchise grew up loving her antics, so it's only right that Rita Repulsa returns to battle the new heroes of the upcoming Power Rangers movie. Originally played by Machiko Soga, Rita Repulsa was arguably as big a part of the Power Rangers franchise as the rangers themselves. With this in mind, the casting of the Power Rangers' arch nemesis is one that will no doubt be key to the success of Lionsgate's 2017 reboot. Power Rangers fans everywhere will therefore be thankful to learn that it was announced today that Elizabeth Banks has taken on the role.

For those not familiar with the character of Rita Repulsa, the video below should give you a pretty good idea of what she's all about. A powerful sorceress, Rita Repulsa was locked away for 10,000 years in a glorified space trash can after her invasion of Earth was foiled by Zordon of Eltar.

As with many of the villains in the Power Rangers franchise, Repulsa added more comedy than peril, but the tone Lionsgate will be taking with their big screen reboot will likely be slightly less camp. Regardless, Banks has all the charisma and ability needed to pull such a role off, although we would quite like to see a screen test of her and that famous Rita Repulsa cackle. Does she have enough to pull off the tall order of making this film a success, though?

Power Rangers is scheduled for a March 24th 2017.
