Carol Was Almost Killed Off in the Third Season of The Walking Dead
Carol has undergone a huge transformation since the first season of The Walking Dead, from the prototypical battered housewife to resident bad-ass who has amassed a startling number of kills over the years. Now, Walking Dead EP/makeup expert Greg Nicotero reveals that she was supposed to meet her maker in season three, but was replaced with another character at the last minute.

Opening quote
"Not a lot of people know that when we were shooting season three, in the episode where T-Dog died, there was a moment where Carol was going to die in lieu of T-Dog's character," Nicotero told SFX magazine (via Games Radar). "At that point there was some concern in the writers' room that they didn't know where to take her character. So the fact that [showrunner] Scott Gimple and the writers have been able to craft this amazing journey for her just goes to show that there is a tremendous amount of story to tell for a lot of these characters."
Closing quote

It's interesting that the writers were going to kill her at this point in the narrative, as she had already started to harden into a warrior at this point, and seemed to have more of a potential arc. And it's kind of a shame they picked T-Dog to replace her, as he never got to be a three-dimensional character at all, and was followed by a succession of black male characters who were brought in one at a time only to be unceremoniously killed off (RIP Tyreese, Bob, and Noah).

But, this did provide an opportunity to improve the female representation on the show, which was much more problematic back in season three (remember Lori and Andrea? Yeah, us neither). And it's especially positive that Carol has become so much more substantive and complex than her comics counterpart, who was a much weaker character and (spoiler!) killed herself early in the series.

The Walking Dead returns for its midseason premiere on February 14.
