Does the Flash/Supergirl Crossover Confirm a DC Multiverse?
We all know that the DC television universe operates as a multiverse, particularly in The Flash, where Earth-Two and the characters' parallel universe counterparts have become integral parts of the plot. But is it possible that all of the DC franchises exist within a multiverse, including the films? The script for the upcoming Supergirl/Flash crossover may indicate that the DC universe is about to expand considerably.

Really really. Flash is about to meet Supergirl. @melissabenoist

Grant Gustin posted a picture of the crossover script on his Instagram last night, and revealed that the episode will be called "Worlds Finest." World's Finest was a classic comic series that ran until the 80's featuring DC's biggest heroes, usually Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, teaming up with each other. More importantly, it was updated into a New 52 series a few years ago, this time called Worlds' Finest, which saw heroes from parallel Earths working together on a "prime Earth." Plus, it regularly featured Power Girl, who is best known as the Earth Two version of Supergirl. It remains to be seen whether this is an actual clue or just a throwback to a classic team-up comic, but it's possible that Supergirl and will be revealed to exist in a separate part of the multiverse, where The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow (and Constantine now, I guess?) coexist in a parallel universe.

This would be exciting on its own, as it could mean crossovers with other DC shows that aren't directly part of the CW Flarrow universe, such as Lucifer or Gotham. Gotham, in particular, was thought to be off-limits since it takes place in a different time period, but if it existed in a parallel universe, then DC characters from other TV shows could potentially cross over into their world (although I can't really imagine what Barry Allen's response would be to the batshit crazy goings-on in Gotham).

But even more excitingly, this could confirm a rumor that all of the DC franchises exist in a multiverse that mimics the comics, which means that TV characters could potentially crossover to the movies, and vice-versa. Kevin Smith recently fanned the flames of these rumors after speaking to Geoff Johns for the Legends of Tomorrow and DCEU CW specials:

Opening quote
"We did a piece where we talked about — I don't know how much I'm supposed to say because they cut it out," Smith said last month. "But the idea [came up] of, 'Hey man, DC is known for nothing if not a multiverse,' so at which point I was like [to Johns], 'Could they fucking crossover?' And he was like, 'Ahh.' So doors are being left open and stuff like that."
Closing quote

This is far from a confirmation, but it seems that there is a possibility. I doubt that any of the TV characters will have significant roles in the films, but I could easily see Ezra Miller's Flash having some sort of multiverse vision and seeing glimpses of Grant Gustin's Barry Allen and maybe even Teddy Sears' Jay Garrick. So long as it was just a cameo, I don't think it would get too confusing, and it would be a fun little Easter egg for the DCTV fans.
