Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is Getting an Unofficial HD Reboot
< >
Star Wars: The Knights of the Old Republic is arguably the greatest Star Wars video game ever made. When it was released back in 2003, KOTOR offered up the most immersive Star Wars experience we'd ever seen. Set a few thousand years before the events of A New Hope, the game's story saw you take your user-designed character through a massive number of missions spanning some of the franchise's most exciting worlds. Tatooine, Kashyyyk, and Korriban were just a few of the environments you could visit as you hunted down clues related to an ancient Star Map that could make or break the Old Republic's war against the Sith.
A few years back, KOTOR was brought back to the market via Aspyr Media's iOS apps, but those who love the game wanted more. Just last year, we wrote about a rumor which suggested that KOTOR was being remastered for XBOX One and PS4, but as of yet, nothing of substance has come of it. While an officially rebooted KOTOR has not yet happened, the next best thing is currently in the works thanks to some highly talented, and extremely committed fans.
Last year, a group from Poem Studios set about taking on the massive project of rebooting the entire KOTOR platform, remodelling everything from its environments to its weapons and characters. Titled Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: Apeiron, the new game will be completely free to play, just so long as you have a copy of the original. Aperion won't just be a remodel, though, with Poem's team of devs committed to actually adding new content including new missions, weapons, and even whole new worlds.

At this point, you're probably asking the same question we did. Is this legal? To that question, the Apeiron team responds with a confident yes.
Opening quote
Can you make a Star Wars game? Engine refresh of games has been around since the 80's and some have become very successful. Games like Black Mesa did it with Half Life and Renegade X rebuilt Command and Conquer in the Unreal Engine 3. This is a full conversion refresh, that being said you will have to own a copy of the original game in order to play Apeiron since we are using the original audio and music. At it's core Apeiron is the most intense KotOR modification ever.
Closing quote
Apeiron is being built with Unreal Engine by a host of Poem Devs and a horde of volunteer fans. Such is the scale of the project, the Apeiron team is always open to securing more volunteers, and you can put your name forward by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and using the subject line Apeiron. If you aren't gifted with dev-wizardry, the Apeiron team will soon be accepting donations as well as volunteer hours.

There's no clues yet as to when the finished product will be available, but we're hoping it happens before Disney catches of it and shuts it all down. Personally, I would obviously love to see this project come to fruition. The Old Republic era might not be canon anymore, but it's provided some of the Star Wars franchise's greatest characters and stories. The prospect of seeing Darth Revan getting an modern reboot is just too much to not get giddy with excitement over.

Thanks to for the heads up.
