Confirmed: Game of Thrones Star Finn Jones to Play Marvel's Iron Fist
Marvel has finally revealed their final Defender, as Game of Thrones actor Finn Jones has joined the MCU as Danny Rand, aka Iron Fist.

Jones' casting was reported earlier today as a rumor, but has now been confirmed by EW and THR, among others. According to THR, the character is being described as "handsome and sophisticated, independent and a loner."

In the comics, Danny Rand is a master of martial arts who wields the power of a mystical force called the Iron Fist, which allows him to focus his chi to extraordinary levels and affords him superhuman abilities, such as super strength, speed, stamina, durability, and agility, as well as heightened reflexes and stamina. He often partners with Luke Cage aka Power Man to form the Heroes for Hire, although there is no word on whether Danny Rand will make an appearance on Luke Cage's solo series.

Jones seems like a great choice to us. He has proven himself more than capable in his role on Game of Thrones, but like the other Defenders, is still relatively unknown enough that he can embody the role without too much baggage. Many were hoping that Marvel would cast an Asian actor as Iron Fist, particularly because the character is highly trained in martial arts that he learned in an Asian country. But while more representation in superhero culture is always a good thing, that might have actually been counterproductive. Marvel should certainly cast more non-white actors, and casting an Asian-American in this role would have mitigated the cultural appropriation aspect, but casting an Asian actor for a mystical martial artist role of all things would reinforce several different stereotypes about Asian-Americans on television. Perhaps we could get an Asian-American Captain Marvel or Black Bolt?

The official description for the Iron Fist series, which has Dexter's Scott Buck on board as showrunner, reads:

Opening quote
Iron Fist centers on Daniel Rand, who fights against the criminal elements corrupting New York with his kung fu skills and ability to summon the power of the fiery Iron Fist. The series picks up with Rand returning to the Big Apple after having gone missing for several years.
Closing quote

Daredevil season two will start streaming on Netflix on March 18, while Luke Cage will premiere later this year. Iron Fist will then get his own solo show, followed by a Defenders miniseries, release dates pending. There will also be a second season of Jessica Jones at some point, but it is unclear whether it will premiere before Defenders.
