Hayley Atwell Says the Agent Carter Finale Leaves Room for Season 3

Agent Carter's season finale airs tonight, just like last year, there's no official word on whether there will be another season. The ratings have been low, but the critical acclaim has stayed strong and steady throughout the second season, so it's still a complete toss-up. According to star Hayley Atwell, tonight's ending will be a true "Hollywood ending" in the sense that it will provide enough closure to serve as the series finale, but will still have enough of a "cliffhanger" to set up a potential third season.

Opening quote
"There's a balance with how it ends," Atwell told THR. "There's enough of a cliffhanger to suggest that that's where we'll go forward if the show gets picked up again. But things are nicely wrapped up in a way that I think the audience will find very satisfying. The audience won't feel frustrated. If anything, they'll come away satisfied but also curious as to what happens beyond, because thanks to all the Marvel films she has appeared in, we know that Peggy's life goes on and she lives quite an extraordinary life and a long life. So there's always room to revisit her in different ways, different decades and different ages."

Agent Carter has some of the lowest ratings on ABC, scoring only a .82 rating with the 18-49 demographic, which is lower than the already-canceled Blood and Oil and only slightly higher than Galavant, which is considered to be all but canceled at this point. As of now, Agent Carter is considered to be "likely to be canceled," by TV by the Numbers, but we're still crossing our fingers that it will hold on for another season. It is Marvel, after all, and this time last year, it didn't seem likely that it would even get a second season.

Opening quote
"I'm really satisfied with where it ends and what happens to Peggy. I'm proud of this season," Atwell said. "So if we get the opportunity to work on it again, then brilliant. Because then I'm sure I'll have even more fun working on it than I did in season two which was a lot. I don't quite know how to top that. But I'd love the opportunity to try. ... The writers have very elegantly put together this ending. I definitely want more."

Either way, we're guaranteed to see the lovely and talented Hayley Atwell on our screens next year, as she has just signed onto a starring role for the ABC drama Conviction, in which she will play the daughter of a former president who investigates crime convictions that may be wrongful. But that doesn't necessarily signify a death knell for Agent Carter, as Atwell assures fans that if Agent Carter is renewed, they will work around her schedule.

Opening quote
"That's something ABC has talked about a lot [with me]," Atwell said. "If [Conviction and Agent Carter season three] both got picked up, then we'd work out some way where I could do both."
