Get Ready to Wield a Lightsaber in the Ultimate Star Wars Virtual Reality Experience
Lucasfilm has just unveiled Trials on Tatooine, an upcoming Star Wars virtual reality game that finally allows you to wield a lightsaber. It's just a proof-of-concept for now, but someday soon we'll actually be able to experience the Star Wars universe firsthand.

Last year, Lucasfilm launched the ILMxLab, which aimed to reinvent the wheel of storytelling through experimentation with immersive platforms. Their latest "cinematic virtual reality experiment" is a recreation of the Star Wars universe, which begins with scrolling yellow text, takes you to Tatooine, and flies the Millennium Falcon right past you. It also, of course, fulfills every nerd's lifelong dream and allows you to have actual lightsaber fights.

"VR was almost made for holding lightsabers, so that's what we're doing," Lucasfilm CTO Rob Bredow said at the 2016 Game Developers Conference (via io9).

The player inhabits the body of a Padawan, who has been training on Tatooine. Han Solo delivers you messages and gives you directions, TIE fighters lurk around every corner, and R2-D2 comes to greet you in his usual adorable way.

Right now, only a ten-minute teaser prototype exists, and there's no word yet on when something will actually be made for consumers. But we do know that this VR technology will likely be used to expand the Star Wars universe regardless; the same lab was responsible for Jakku Spy, which gave fans some insight into Rey's home planet. Some of the interactive elements in this proof-of-concept will be games, while others will be interactive stories that serve as part of the new Expanded Universe.

"What we've been doing all this year long is working out all these component pieces that we're going to be applying to a greater story," said John Gaeta, a member of the Star Wars Story Group.
