Dave Filoni to Announce Something Big for Star Wars Rebels at Star Wars Celebration
Star Wars Rebels has successfully become must-watch TV for fans of the galaxy far far away, and after this week's huge season 2 finale, we suspect the show's fan-base might just have grown even larger. Given the questions raised by Twilight of the Apprentice, it's no surprise that we're all desperate to learn more of whats in store for Star Wars Rebels in the show's third season. This week, on the Rebels aftershow 'Rebels Recon', Dave Filoni dropped a major hint that something huge is going to happen when the show returns later this year.

Opening quote
Something big is going to happen that I think people really, really want, and I know that I've wanted it for a while. We've figured out a way to do it. It's a very important moment in Star Wars and a very important moment for Star Wars fans....You will definitely learn more about that at Celebration coming up, because I'm going to talk about it specifically
Closing quote

After having Ahsoka, Vader, and Maul all in one episode, it's hard to imagine what could be much bigger for Rebels next season. But if you think this is just a bit of marketing spiel to try and drum up interest in the show, you clearly don't know Dave Filoni. As I've said in the past, Filoni is arguably behind only George Lucas when it comes to understanding storytelling in the Star Wars universe, so if he says its something that fans want, you can absolutely take his word as gospel.

As for what this moment could be, there are obviously numerous possibilities, but it would seem that the stars might finally be aligning to give us an on-screen adaptation of one of the Star Wars expanded universe's greatest characters. You might recall that earlier this year, we wrote about a rumor claiming that Admiral Thrawn would be coming to Rebels in Season 3. Putting Filoni's words into this context would seem to all but confirm that it's Thrawn whom he is referring to.

Rebels has already given us numerous nods to the old expanded universe with references and imagery straight out of the Old Republic era, but after giving us Vader v Ahsoka, it looks like Filoni is about to grant Star Wars fans their ultimate wish. Fans have long bemoaned the removal of the Expanded Universe from the official Star Wars canon, but LucasFilm President Kathleen Kennedy has always insisted that she was open to bringing themes and characters from the EU into the new era of Star Wars storytelling. Despite Kennedy's comments, a large portion of the Star Wars fanbase has remained fiercely opposed to many of the new stories being told, but in putting a character like Thrawn into Rebels, Dave Filoni might just have produced the perfect peace offering.

Star Wars Celebration 2016 is set to be held at London's Excel center in July of this year, and Outer Places will be on site bringing you all the news from what will likely be a huge weekend for the franchise.
