Did The Flash Showrunner Just Give Away the Identity of the Man in the Iron Mask?
Spoilers for The Flash season 2 ahead!
We thought that learning Zoom's identity would make us less confused about what's going on in The Flash this season, but we were wrong. Future episodes will continue to sort out Hunter Zolomon's exact relationship to Jay Garrick, but showrunner Greg Berlanti has assured fans that they have not gone so far as to turn the beloved comics character evil:
For those inquiring, we love Jay Garrick and would never make him a baddie. No reinvention. Keep watching :) love that you're asking q's.— Greg Berlanti (@GBerlanti) April 20, 2016
Let's unpack this a bit. We know that Hunter Zolomon from Earth-2 was pretending to be the "hero" Jay Garrick, and when the showrunners confirmed Zoom's identity, they said he was "Hunter Zolomon a.k.a. Jay Garrick." This led many fans to believe that Hunter Zolomon and Jay Garrick were just going to be interchangeable, but if there's no huge departure from the comics, as Berlanti claims, then that can't be case. So that presumably means that before the end of the season, we'll get to meet the real Jay Garrick, who is not evil. So it's a reasonable assumption that he's the man being held hostage in Zoom's lair, who tapped the word "JAY" when asking Barry for help.
But who is Jay Garrick exactly? Or in other words, who will play him? Some have been speculating that it will be Earth-2 Wally West, whom we haven't met yet, but it would be a little weird to conflate these two characters in some way. I think it's more likely that the "real" Jay will once again be played by Teddy Sears. He established that he created the hero persona in order to give the people of Earth-2 false hope, but it's possible that he's lying, and that Jay Garrick is, in fact, a different person who looks just like him. Alternatively, since the Jay killed by Zoom in the midseason finale was a time remnant, the man in the iron mask could be the Hunter Zolomon from Earth-1, whom we saw earlier this season:
Since the Jay killed by Zoom in the midseason finale was a time remnant, we haven't seen much of Earth-1 Hunter Zolomon, and it's possible that he'll turn out to be a stand-up guy who becomes a version of the Jay Garrick character from the comics. But honestly, this Zoom/Jay/Hunter reveal is becoming so impossibly muddled, it's difficult to make too many predictions at this point.
What do you think?
The Flash airs on Tuesdays at 8pm on The CW.
