New Independence Day: Resurgence Trailer Features Giant Aliens and Moon Bases
< >
The first Independence Day movie was the quintessential Summer blockbuster, so it stands to reason that 20 years on, its sequel should follow in its footsteps. In a summer packed full of geeky movies from Captain America: Civil War to Suicide Squad, Independence Day: Resurgence looks set to offer up some more traditional blockbuster fare.

As this explosive new trailer for Roland Emmerich's big sequel shows, Independence Day: Resurgence has everything you want from a Summer popcorn flick.

- Giant Aliens? Check.

- Enough explosions to make even Michael Bay blush? Check.

- Witty one-liners delivered by a Hollywood master (Jeff Goldblum)? Check.

- Hemsworth brother? Check.

Set 20 years after the events of the first movie, Independence Day: Resurgence sees humanity rebuilding thanks to the capture of alien technology. With bases on the moon and a new Earth Space Defense Force, our planet should be safe from any future alien threats.  The problem is, the aliens we defeated 20 years ago have also had a couple of decades to think things over, and it looks like they're pretty pissed.

While some characters have been replaced and Will Smith hasn't returned, Resurgence features a host of cast members from its predecessor. Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman and Brent Spiner will all reprise their roles from 1996, while Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, and Maika Monroe add a modern face to proceedings.

It might look a little silly, but we're cautiously optimistic that Independence Day: Resurgence can recapture that classic popcorn magic displayed by its predecessor 20 years ago.
