Surprise! Sales of Print Comic Books Are on the Rise
The death knell may be tolling for most forms of print media, but comic books are thriving. Despite the explosion of digital comics in recent years, sales of traditional print comics are on the rise as well; growing alongside their electronic counterparts instead of being replaced by them. In fact, according to a study by CNBC, the number of print comics sold has actually increased each of the past five years, reversing a longtime downward trend. So what's changed?

Most of the credit probably has to go to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film franchise kicked off in 2008 and has since become the highest-grossing film series ever, creating many new fans in the process. And since Marvel currently commands about 47 percent of all comic book sales (DC is second with 27 percent), as Marvel goes, so goes the industry. But that's not to dismiss the work of others. The Walking Dead is the biggest show on TV, and has undoubtedly helped raise the profile of Image Comics, and of course DC is constantly throwing new movies and TV shows at us to see what sticks. Really, there's a lot of great comics out there, and the eagerness of Hollywood to adapt them into TV shows and movies is helping them immensely.

So fear not, luddites and old school comics fans. It seems the old fashioned funny books won't be going away anytime soon.
