Jon Bernthal Says His Frank Castle Isn't The Punisher Yet
Given the amount of attention he received, you could be forgiven for thinking that Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle was the headline act of Marvel's Daredevil Season 2. But, while The Punisher was merely playing a supporting role to the Devil of Hell's Kitchen's antics, it soon became clear that he'd done enough to show he could be a star in his own right.

Jon Bernthal's performance was widely regarded as one of the most on-point portrayals of the The Punisher of all time, a fact that Marvel recognized by giving him his own Netflix series, which will land on the platform in the next couple of years. But, as faithful as Bernthal's portrayal of The Punisher was to its source material, the actor has suggested that he's only just getting started.

Opening quote
"I think when you're talking about characters like these, the way they fight, what's motivating the fight is very important," Bernthal told Awards Daily. "Beating someone up to drag them into jail is different than someone who is exercising his rage on people. The Frank Castle you find in this story is not The Punisher. He's reeling from the loss of his family. He's driven by rage and is on a singular mission to find these people who took his family from him, and do it as brutally as possible."
Closing quote

This will no doubt get a lot of Punisher fans excited. Ever since he was cast as the character, Bernthal has shown a commitment to learning what makes his character tick, and with his own season on the horizon, this latest soundbite demonstrates how all that research has paid off.

It's not yet clear what this means for Bernthal's character. The actor responded to a question about what the future holds for Frank Castle by saying "I have no idea. We are going to do a show with him next year. I'm really excited about that. We'll have to see." But, while he might not be clear on what the show's driving force will be, he revealed there was one element from Daredevil season 2 that surprised him.

Opening quote
I think the relationship with Karen surprised me the most. It was a rare thing that can happen when you have a real collaboration between writers and actors. These writers and producers watch the dailies, they see things that were happening. You might not be able to put words to it, and they develop that. In the same way that there's this connection between Frank and Karen and we never explain exactly what it is. I felt what it became was that I thought he looked at her as, this is the kind of woman his daughter could have become, bold and intelligent, and courageous, independent, bold and caring. I think he saw his daughter in her. I think as a man that swore off caring about anything besides his mission and completing it, I think he started to care about her, her well-being, and her opinion.
Closing quote

The bond between Karen and Frank was certainly a surprise, but it was also one of the season's strongest elements. The two characters should, on the face of it, be completely at odds with each other, but Karen was one of the few people to understand what was driving Frank's quest.
