16 Highlights from San Diego Comic Con 2016
< >
This year's Comic Con was even more insane than usual. Between Marvel's ridiculous(ly amazing) pyrotechnics in Hall H, to new footage from everything from Justice League to The Walking Dead, there were almost too many reveals to keep up with. So in case you missed anything, here are sixteen highlights from SDCC 2016:

Bryan Fuller visits the Hall H line

Star Trek showrunner and class act Bryan Fuller handed out coffee and donuts in the Hall H line in the wee hours of the morning.

First Arrow season 5 trailer

The first trailer gives us a glimpse at Green Arrow's new costume, the addition of Mister Terrific to Team Arrow, and our final year of flashbacks (finally!). We have a feeling this season will fall prey to a lot of the same pitfalls, but we're going to stay cautiously optimistic for now.

First trailer for The Flash season 3

After that game-changing season finale, the world of The Flash will never be the same, as we saw in the first trailer for season 3. We're getting into Flashpoint territory, with Barry losing his powers, Wally West gaining them, and Cisco Ramon becoming the richest man in America.

Eddie Redmayne hands out wands to everyone in Hall H

The Fantastic Beasts star handed out high-quality Harry Potter wands to everyone in the Hall H audience (with the help of a few hundred Warner Bros. employees).

The Killing Joke causes yet more controversy

The Killing Joke tried to fix the controversy from the comics, and just caused more controversy. Because of course a less-than-feminist plotline for Batgirl should be fixed by giving her a sexual relationship with Batman. Why not?

The Black Panther cast appears on stage for the first time

Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong'o, Michael B. Jordan, Danai Gurrira... what could go wrong? This movie looks amazing already, even beyond its implications for diversifying the MCU, especially since it's now been confirmed that Nyong'o and Jordan are both villains.

The cast of Aliens reunites for the 30th anniversary

We got to see Newt all grown up, hear James Cameron's anecdotes about filming and production, and celebrate the legacy of Ripley as a bad-ass sci-fi hero. As for whether we'll see more Ripley, Sigourney Weaver said that Neill Blomkamp's script "has everything fans could want," and that she hopes it will go into production once they're both done with their current projects.

Final Suicide Squad Trailer

Suicide Squad is getting closer and closer, and the audience in Hall H was treated to the final trailer with some extra footage, with seven more minutes of footage and nine minutes of B-roll as a bonus.

The Walking Dead reveals Ezekiel and a tiger

But not a character death... yet.

Star Trek 2017 reveals a name and first teaser trailer

In keeping with the attempt to bring Star Trek back to its optimistic roots, the new series will be called Star Trek: Discovery, and will focus on Gene Roddenberry's trademark progressivism. The teaser doesn't show much, but showrunner Bryan Fuller was very clear that his vision of Star Trek will seek to counteract the current political climate of fear-mongering and bigotry.

First Wonder Woman trailer

We've been waiting many years for a mainstream female-led superhero movie, and from the first trailer, Wonder Woman won't disappoint. We already know that Gal Godot is amazing as Diana Prince, and the first footage showed that the action is to die for. The fight choreography looks much better than Batman v Superman, Man of Steel, and many other recent superhero blockbusters, so hopefully that will put the notion that women can't direct action movies to rest once and for all.

Doctor Strange gets trippy

Yes, the new Doctor Strange trailer was trippy, with cities collapsing into themselves and such, but not as trippy as the crazy clip that showed Tilda Swinton's Ancient One sending Strange on a trip through the astral plane, or the crazy projected light show Marvel put on as an introduction, which was the most innovative thing we saw all weekend.

Will Justice League be funny?

We didn't get a Green Lantern casting reveal, but we got something arguably even better: Justice League footage that was genuinely enjoyable, and even cracked a joke or two. Could the DCEU's losing streak end with Batman v Superman? We certainly hope so!

Kurt Russell's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 role revealed

We were desperately hoping that Kurt Russell would be Star Lord's father, and that Ego the Living Planet would be one of the villains, and the Comic Con footage confirmed that Kurt Russell is Star Lord's father IS Ego the Living Planet! But even after all that, the real star of the show was Baby Groot, who is officially the most adorable superhero in existence.

First Spider-man: Homecoming footage

We finally got our first look at the Spider-Man reboot! Tom Holland and Zendaya are adorable in the John Hughes-esque, high school-set Homecoming, which included a confirmation that Vulture is the main villain (played by Michael Keaton), Peter going through awkward postpubescence, and a montage of Avengers' high school yearbook photos set to Joan Jett's "Bad Reputation." Read our full recap of the footage here.

Captain Marvel casting reveal

After plenty of rumors and speculation, the actress behind Captain Marvel was revealed to be Academy Award winner Brie Larson. DC is getting the jump on the female superhero movie with 2017's Wonder Woman, but we absolutely can't wait to see Marvel finally diversify its roster and add another bad-ass woman to the Avengers ranks.
