Leaked Details on Kelly Marie Tran's Character in Star Wars Episode VIII
Relative newcomer Kelly Marie Tran has been cast in Star Wars: Episode VIII in what is reportedly a major role, but her character has been somewhat mysterious thus far. Now, details are starting to come out about a scene she filmed with John Boyega, and her role seems interesting, if more limited than we expected.

Potential spoilers follow!

According to a new report from International Business Times, which claims to have a source close to the movie, Tran just filmed a scene with Boyega at a bar, described as "fancier" than the bars seen in previous Star Wars films. Her character, who is reportedly named Aya, gives Finn information about the First Order, and appears to be some sort of information broker who sells intel to the highest bidder. While they're talking at the bar, First Order stormtroopers barge in and start attacking, while Aya sneaks Finn out through the back.

This description generally lines up with a scene breakdown from I Was Raised to Do One Thing, which also purports to have a source close to production. They also claim that, contrary to prior reports, there is no romance between Finn and Aya, but rather she is interested in Finn and he doesn't reciprocate. However, these sources have apparently only witnessed one scene between the two characters, so a romance could develop over the course of the film.

But it's also possible that the romantic storyline was cut, since Tran's role seems to have been trimmed significantly. At first, the two new female characters, the other of whom is played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw, were described as co-leads, but then the studio delayed the film for "positive script re-writes," which involved reducing the development of those two characters so they could spend more time with the Force Awakens characters that were well-received by the audience, including Rey, Finn, and Poe. Now, the new report claims that Tran was hardly on set, and that she may have a role comparable in screentime to Max Von Sydow in TFA.
