ABC in Talks with Lucasfilm to Make a Star Wars TV Series
Will a live-action Star Wars TV series finally become a reality? ABC has officially confirmed that they are on board to develop a Star Wars TV series, and the talks are ongoing with Lucasfilm.

At the TCA press tour today (via EW), ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey was asked whether she would like to add a Star Wars series to their line-up, especially since both ABC and Lucasfilm are owned by parent company Disney:

Opening quote
"Ohh, as a fan, I would absolutely love to say 'Yes,'" she said. "The conversations with Lucas, we have had conversations with them and will continue to have conversations with them. I think it would be wonderful if we could find a way to extend that brand into our programming."
Closing quote

If this sounds a little bit vague, don't worry, Dungey went on to confirm that talks are actually taking place:

Opening quote
"It's all a little bit hush-hush," Dungey said. "That company exists under a big shroud of secrecy. If you feel Marvel's secretive, [Lucasfilm] takes it to a whole other level … [Talks] are ongoing. We don't have an official timeline yet."
Closing quote

This sounds very promising. Not only are talks ongoing, but the statement "we don't have an official timeline yet" sounds like the show is all but a given, and that it's just a matter of when. Nothing is official, of course, but it's safe to say that we can keep looking out for this project in the future.

The question is: would it be animated or live-action? Live-action makes more sense on its face, since Lucasfilm already has an animated Star Wars series on Disney XD, and ABC generally tends to air live-action programming. But on the other hand, the costs may be prohibitive for network TV. There was a live-action Star Wars series, called Star Wars: Underworld, in development years ago, created by George Lucas himself. Scripts were written, the entire plot was planned out, but it was put on hold indefinitely due to budget constraints. It's possible that ABC is talking about reviving that project (although probably not, since Lucas was bought out of the company), but it could also be a sign that live-action Star Wars is too expensive for traditional networks, and probably not on brand for subscription channels like HBO. We'll have to wait and see, but if Star Wars: Underworld were revived, we would be very happy campers.
