Marvel Announces New Solo Ghost Rider Comic Ahead of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Appearance
Ghost Rider is making a comeback in all different kinds of media. After the announcement that the character will be making an appearance on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.Marvel has revealed that Robbie Reyes is finally getting another comic, to launch this fall.

The original, and most famous, version of Ghost Rider is Johnny Blaze, who was portrayed by Nicolas Cage in the ill-advised movies. In the comics, Johnny agreed to sell his soul to the devil (later revealed to be a demon) to save his father, and so when he fights evil his head becomes a flaming skull and he rides around on a flaming motorcycle. Then, in 2014, the Ghost Rider persona was rebooted with Robbie Reyes, a younger character who is taken over by an evil spirit that gives him most of the same powers as other Ghost Riders. But since it's just a run-of-the-mill evil spirit rather than a demon with Satanic undertones, he doesn't have the more biblical powers, like the "Penance Stare."

After much speculation that the character was getting his own Netflix series, Marvel confirmed at SDCC that he would be arriving at Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. this season. They also confirmed that it will be Robbie Reyes rather than the Johnny Blaze version, so it's only natural that they would reboot the comics to capitalize on the publicity. However, Marvel contends that it's mostly a coincidence, and that they were always planning on bringing back Robbie Reyes after his All-New Ghost Rider run two years ago.
Opening quote
"We were waiting for [All-New Ghost Rider writer] Felipe [Smith]'s schedule more than anything," Axel Alonso, editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics, told TV Guide. "I would have loved to have launched it sooner, but he has a prosperous career in animation, we needed the time to carve it up and do it right."

The new series will be titled Ghost Rider, and will once again be written by Smith, with interior art by Danilo Beyruth. But once again, we shouldn't expect the same kind of avenging angel as Johnny Blaze, since the spirit, who was a serial killer while he was alive, functions more as the Hulk to Robbie's Bruce Banner.

Opening quote
"Prior Ghost Riders were compelled to do good," Smith said. "Robbie makes the choice to do good things, because it's the spirit who compels him to kill."
Closing quote

The Ghost Rider series launches this November. Season four of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premieres on September 20, although it's not known when Ghost Rider will appear yet.
