Captain Marvel Movie Will "Reinvent" Origin Story to Avoid Green Lantern Comparisons
After the casting of Oscar winner Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, the Captain Marvel movie is going full speed ahead, and will likely provide an origin story for Marvel's first female lead character. But for fans of Marvel Comics, that origin may be a little different than they expect, since co-writer Nicole Perlman says that Carol's backstory will be changed somewhat to avoid direct comparisons to another well-known superhero from rival company DC/Warner Bros.

On the August 10 episode of the Any Time with Vin Forte podcast (via Screenrant), Perlman discussed the great responsibility associated with writing the character, and revealed that Carol's origin story will be "reinvented" as a result of its similarity to Green Lantern's:

Opening quote
I don't think I've ever had a project where I've been more mindful about the impact that it could have and the importance of it. She's such an incredibly kick-ass character and Kelly Sue DeConnick did a great run with her story arc recently. But here's the thing, if you were just going to do a straight adaptation of the comics, her origin story is very similar to Green Lantern. And obviously, that's not what we want to do. There's a lot of reinvention that needs to happen. And also, she's her own person and she's a great character. We have to be aware of what's happened in other Marvel film and makes sure that her particular storyline is unique and fun and also fits in within this world that's going on at the same time.
Closing quote

Although Green Lantern and Captain Marvel's origin stories are not exactly the same, they do share plenty of superficial similarities. The characters are both pilots who received their powers from extraterrestrial sources (Green Lantern from an alien ring, Captain Marvel from a Kree explosion). And while Captain Marvel will probably come out long before DC gets their Green Lantern Corps movie into gear (as far as we know, the character isn't even cast yet), the origin story was already seen in the much-derided 2011 Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds. And especially since everyone despised that movie, it's probably best to steer clear.

But the question is: what are they going to change? We hope that they don't change the fact that she's a pilot, since that is an essential aspect of her character. More likely, they'll just change the exact mechanism by which she gets superpowers, and maybe make it more connected to the rest of the MCU. Kree appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy, so there's still a chance that they will be involved, but the actual plot of the origin story may be changed to differentiate it from other Marvel movies.

Captain Marvel is set to hit theaters on March 8, 2019.
