Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Will Happen, But Maybe Without James Gunn
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is already one of the most anticipated movies of next year, and it hasn't even released any footage yet (but don't worry, we've seen some, and it's glorious). So of course, everyone is already looking forward to the third movie, and James Gunn assures fans that it will happen, although there are no plans for it yet:

The fact that Marvel will "probably" order another sequel for one of their most popular franchises is not exactly news—the opposite of news, in fact—but Gunn's statement that he "hasn't decided what he's doing after 2" is another story. Since this was a response to a question about the release date, it could just be an indication that he may want to do other projects before directing the third Guardians (and he probably has enough clout at this point to make Marvel wait a little).

But it could also be a hint that he wants to leave the franchise altogether. It's rare for any one director to helm more than one or two movies in the MCU; Jon Favreau, Joss Whedon, and Peyton Reed all have two under their belt (after Ant-Man and the Wasp), while the Russo brothers are the only ones to stick with the franchise for at least three movies. Plus, Gunn has been consumed by Guardians for several years now, and like Whedon, there's every chance that he may want to go back to directing original material.

On the one hand, we would be terribly sad to see him leave the MCU, and would love to see him take a victory lap and at least finish out a Guardians trilogy. But on the other hand, we would also love to see him go back to original material. Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the best, most irreverent superhero movies of all time, but Gunn's offbeat black comedy/non-superhero film, Super, was even better. However, he's also shown interest in Guardians spin-offs rather than direct sequels, so maybe there's a James Gunn-directed Baby Groot solo movie in our future.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017.
