Everything We Learnt From That Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Trailer
< >
Last night, attention was temporarily wrestled away from Michael Phelps' world-beating performances at the Rio Olympics, focusing instead on the galaxy-saving exploits of Felicity Jones and the cast of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The trailer wasn't just a welcome end to a months-long wait, it was also our best look yet at the characters and plot of what will surely be one of the year's biggest movies. In many ways, we already know a lot about Rogue One thanks to its close proximity to the OT movies, but let's not forget that this is a movie made up (mostly) of all new characters, planets, and technology. This new trailer took us a great deal closer to understanding these crucial events in the Star Wars timeline, as well as giving us a lot to puzzle over while we wait for December 16th to roll into town.

1. Jyn Erso Might Have Been More Than Just a Petty Criminal

We've known for some time now that Jyn Erso has a checkered past, but could it be that she was more than just a petty criminal or a rogue? It's thought that most of Jyn's crimes were the Star Wars galaxy's equivalent of fraud, but the when she's asked if she can be trusted "without her shackles", that seems to suggest she's been more than just a thorn in the side of the Alliance. It would certainly be a nice twist if we were to learn that Jyn was a hardened criminal who was willing to turn her life around in a big way, all to save the Galaxy. LucasFilm has been fairly tight-lipped about her character's background, which means there could be some surprises in store for us when the movie officially lands.

2. No, Star Destroyers Don't Have Cloaking Devices

We've seen a few people getting very excited about that Star Destroyer moment, claiming that it shows one of the Imperial behemoths using a cloaking device. While I might be wrong (although I doubt it), this is just a nice bit of camera trickery to show the Star Destroyer emerging from the Death Star's shadow. Calm down, people.

3. Baze Malbus's "Very Big Gun" Lived Up to Expectations

At Star Wars Celebration last month, Wen Jiang teased us with a mysterious statement that his character, Baze Malbus had "a very big gun". It seemed like a weird statement at the time, but after seeing Malbus in action, we totally get what he was driving at. It really does look like a very big, and very powerful gun.

4. Headless Humanoids Are Now a Thing in the Star Wars Universe

With Rogue One visiting a bunch of new planets and locations, it's likely that we'll be introduced to some new aliens, and creatures too. On such a note, there was one moment in the trailer that got us really excited.. Check out the moment when you see the Tank Troopers cruising through Jedha, and look at the dude in the bottom left. He appears to be just a normal human, but where's his head? Oh wait, his head appears to have been replaced by an antenna array that wouldn't look out of place on an astromech. We love you, Star Wars. Never, ever change.

5. The Force Works in Mysterious Ways

Donnie Yen's Chirrut Îmwe looks likely to be one of the most interesting characters of this entire movie. At first blush, you're led to believe that he is able to harness the power of the Force, but it's actually just a projection he gives off to help him intimidate his enemies. As we've already found out, we're going to learn more about the Force in Rogue One than we have in any previous movie and Chirrut Îmwe could be the vehicle for that learning.

Jedha is a deeply spiritual world, and it once played host to the first beings ever to make contact with the Force. I'm becoming more and more convinced that Chirrut Îmwe is a member of The Church of the Force, which is the very same group that gave us Lor San Tekka in The Force Awakens. If this is the case, we could get some serious insight into how those who aren't Force-sensitive interact with this mystical power, and maybe a better understanding of Lor San Tekka himself (RIP).

6. This is Looking Likely to be a Beautifully-Shot Movie

One of the reasons I was so excited for this movie was Gareth Edwards' gritty, 'up close and personal' style, and while that looks set to be present in the action scenes, this trailer proves that Edwards is also able to give us those beautiful, large-scale shots that we sci-fi fans all demand from our movies. The two shots of the Death Star, one where it looks tiny compared to Jedha and the other where it's able to eclipse the Sun, should give a lot of hope to those who like to geek out over cinematography.

7. Improved Technologies?

In Empire Strikes Back, the Imperial AT-AT walkers are impenetrable four-legged fortresses, but the AT-ACT walkers we see in this trailer look to be far more vulberable. Now, these are mainly cargo transports, but could it be that the events of Rogue One are what leads the Empire to improving the shielding on some of their most fearsome weaponry? If that's not the case, I want to know where those rocket launchers were on Hoth!

He's Back!

Sure, we all knew this was going to happen, but just as the Star Wars Celebration trailer did, this latest trailer confirms that one of Hollywood's most iconic villains will have a role to play in this movie. Excited? Of course you are!
