The Girl with All the Gifts has taken the sci-fi book community by storm, and now, fans have even more of this offbeat zombie narrative coming their way. Author M.R. Carey just announced that he's in the process of writing a prequel novel that takes place in the same zombie apocalypse:

As readers of the novel know, The Girl with All the Gifts takes place approximately twenty years after a fungal infection ravages the world and turns people into rabid, cannibalistic "hungries." The prequel novel takes place after the zombie apocalypse has already happened, but years before the events of the original novel.

Opening quote
"In this new novel, we go back about a decade, so this is while Melanie is growing up in captivity at base Hotel Echo," Carey says in the above video, "some other events are playing out, which eventually will bring her world to a turning point."

He goes on to say that this will be a standalone story, and readers can pick it up who haven't read The Girl with All the Gifts.

Opening quote
"It has a new cast, it's a freestanding story. But it picks up on what we already know about Melanie's world, and I think it opens up a new and unexpected vista on that world."
Closing quote

The film adaptation of The Girl with All the Gifts stars Gemma Arterton, Glenn Close, and Sennia Nanua as Melanie. It will be released on September 23 in the UK, but doesn't yet have a US release date. But American fans can sate themselves with the prequel novel, which is set to come out in May 2017.
