Mary Jane Confirmed as Love Interest for Spider-Man: Homecoming
Though initial rumors had Zendaya playing a new love interest named Michele, it seems that won't actually be the case. Or at least that won't be the case if a new report from TheWrap claiming that she's playing the iconic Spider-Man love interest, Mary Jane Watson.

Of course, Mary Jane was first played by Kirsten Dunst in the Raimi Spider-Man trilogy. Then when Andrew Garfield put on the suit in The Amazing Spider-Man, a different iconic love interest, Gwen Stacy, took the spotlight. It was believed that Mary Jane would be making a return in the third Garfield Spidey flick, but when Marvel struck a deal with sony and Tom Holland was cast in the role, many were left wondering who the new romantic interest would be.

There's likely to be some backlash from fans who can't get over the fact that Zendaya is of a different ethnicity than the Mary Jane of the comics, but as race is not central to the character, it's hard to see why anyone would really have a legitimate reason to be concerned about the matter. Zendaya's casting adds some much-needed diversity to the MCU, and from her previous works, there's a lot of reason to believe she's the perfect match for Holland's teenage Spidey.

The footage of Spider-Man: Homecoming that was shown in Hall H at SDCC this year sounded amazingly fun, and Marvel will no doubt be doing everything in their power to get their most popular character a perfect big screen debut in the MCU. It'll likely be one of the most popular, and possibly on of the best, comic book movies of 2017.

Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters on July 7th of next year.
