Stranger Things: The Duffer Brothers Reveal Whether Barb Will Be Back for Season 2

Spoilers for Stranger Things season one follow!

At the end of the first season of Stranger Things, the fates of several characters were left up in the air. Eleven mysteriously disappeared, the villain, Dr. Brenner, was seen being attacked by the monster, and Barb—looked pretty dead in the Upside Down, but this is sci-fi, so she could come back, right?

In a new interview with IGN, the Duffer brothers revealed Barb's fate, and it's not good news for fans of the breakout character:

Opening quote
"I can't see it happening" Matt Duffer said of Barb returning in season two. "But Barb will not be forgotten. We'll make sure there's some justice for Barb."

A second season has technically not been confirmed yet, but it's essentially a given. The show is a huge hit, is rumored to beat Daredevil for Netflix's highest-rated show ever, and even Netflix boss Reed Hastings has said "we would be dumb not to" order another season. So if (when) Stranger Things comes back, the consequences of Barb's death will be a huge part of the second season.

Opening quote
"People get very frustrated, understandably, that the town doesn't seem to be really dealing with Barb. That stuff is all happening. We're just not spending any screen time on it," Matt Duffer said.

"It's not like her parents are like 'Oh Barb left. She died!' Season One actually takes place over the course of six or seven days – it's a really short period of time. So part of what we want to do with hypothetical Season Two is to explore the repercussions of everything that happened."
Closing quote

It would have been pretty far-fetched for Barb to return after everything that happened to her, but this is still disappointing. On the positive side, this might open up the possibility that Shannon Purser will be cast as Squirrel Girl

In other news, Matt Duffer also revealed the fate of Dr. Brenner, who was in rough shape but was never actually killed onscreen:

Opening quote
"I would say that if we were going to kill Brenner… as an audience member watching the show, if that was his death, that would be very unsatisfying to me – when the monster jumps on him and we cut away. He would deserve much more than that as an ending. So yes, there's a possibility of seeing him again."
