Todd Lasance Is Playing a Speedster in The Flash Season 3 - But It's Not Savitar
That's right—we're getting yet another speedster villain on The Flash. In addition to one of the Big Bads, Savitar, it turns out that Todd Lasance is playing The Rival, a speedy villain with ties to Jay Garrick.

Back in July, Flash fans captured some set photos of Wally West apparently fighting a new, black-clad speedster baddie. Since Zoom turned into Black Flash last season, Black Racer seemed like the best option, but mostly fans were nonplussed.

Then, when producers revealed at TCA that Savitar would be one of this year's Big Bads (the other being Doctor Alchemy), a misunderstanding of the announcement led to outlets reporting that The Vampire Diaries Todd Lasance would be playing the villain. However, showrunner Greg Berlanti quickly put the kibosh on those rumors.

Now, TV Line reports that Lasance is, in fact, playing a villainous speedster, but it's not Savitar. It's The Rival, or Edward Clariss, a comics character who was a professor of Jay Garrick's and wanted the credit for inventing Velocity 9. And since Savitar doesn't traditionally wear a Flash-like costume in the comics, but The Rival does, it's probably safe to say that Lasance is under that mask in the July set photos.

But then, what about Savitar? He will likely be a more mysterious presence than another Reverse-Flash type of villain, as is teased briefly in the new season three promo:

From the promo and previous statements from the producers, Savitar will be less like an evil version of The Flash, and more of a divinity with his own cult following:

Opening quote
"Savitar in Hindu means 'the god of speed,' and he has this sort of cult-like essence, where he's sort of like the speed god," said co-showrunner Todd Helbing. "But everything about him is different than Zoom or Reverse-Flash. I can't go into too much detail, but he's quite a bit different."
Closing quote

Considering that we've had speedster villains for the last two seasons, and are now getting another in Lasance's Rival, we'd better hope Savitar is significantly different. And on the bright side, now that Lasance is confirmed to be playing another character, that leaves room for Savitar to be Draco Malfoy's alter ego.

The Flash returns for season three on October 4 at 8pm on The CW.
