How The Flash's Season 3 Speedster Villain Will Be Different from All the Other Ones

In season one of The Flash, Barry went up against another speedster, Reverse-Flash. Then, in season two, Barry went up against Zoom, and it started to get a little repetitive. Then, we found out that Barry (and/or Wally West) would go up against yet another speedster villain, and we all started to wonder if The Flash had any more tricks up its sleeve.

But as it turns out, we might be able to rest easy. The above black-clad speedster is not Savitar, but another comics villain called The Rival, played by Todd Lasance, who won't be one of the Big Bads of the season. Savitar, on the other hand, is technically a speedster in the comics, but judging from the first look at him in the teaser, he'll be different than the other speedsters Barry has encountered.

According to Flash co-showrunner Todd Helbing, Savitar is different because he focuses on "psychological warfare" rather than a physical contest:

Opening quote
"[Season 3] is more about psychological warfare," Helbing told TV Line, adding that "everything about [Savitar] is different than Zoom or Reverse-Flash… I can't go into too much detail, but he's quite a bit different."
Closing quote

Savitar is also different from any other main villains we've seen, because he works in a team. Savitar will work in conjunction with the other Big Bad, Doctor Alchemy, in a strategy that Helbing refers to as "flanking."

Opening quote
"[We're] trying to have the powers that they both possess play off of each other," Helbing said. "It's not just, 'Oh, I have to catch this guy and take him down.' It's like, 'Crap, now there's this other guy, Dr. Alchemy,' who has these transmutation qualities [via] this Philosopher's Stone. You start to learn what he does with this stuff and how the both of them are coexisting."
Closing quote

Helbing has also stated that Savitar will have divinity-like qualities, and some kind of cult following:

Opening quote
"Savitar in Hindu means 'the god of speed,'" Helbing said last week, "and he has this sort of cult-like essence, where he's sort of like the speed god."
Closing quote

The Flash returns for season three on October 4 at 8pm on The CW.
