Marvel Developing a 'New Warriors' Series Starring Squirrel Girl
It looks like Barb from Stranger Things might get a chance to play Squirrel Girl after all.

According to a new report from TV Line, Marvel and ABC are developing a series about the New Warriors - and front and center of the team will be none other than the puffy-tailed heroine. The series would be a comedy, unlike the bulk of Marvel's current television offerings, and is currently being shopped around to both cable channels and streaming outlets.

The series is being pitched as a "junior version of the Avengers." In the comics, the New Warriors have always been made up of younger heroes, and in their '90s heyday included characters like Nova, Speedball, Justice, Firestar, and Night Thrasher. In their most famous moment (or infamous), the team was responsible for the incident that kicked off the Civil War of the comics. Their current lineup consists of Haechi, Hummingbird, Justice, Nova, Scarlet Spider, Speedball, Sun Girl, and Water Snake. As you'll notice, Squirrel Girl doesn't appear among the ranks, and that's because she's never belonged to the team.

Given the character's current popularity, it's not surprising that she's being shoehorned into the show. If I had to guess, I'd say this was done at the expense of Nova, whose popularity as a solo character and cosmic connections make him a more likely candidate for Marvel's movies than TV shows. In any case, it looks like Squirrel Girl and at least some of the New Warriors will eventually be heading to television, so somebody call up Anna Kendrick!
