UPDATED: Game of Thrones: Is This the Leaked Release Date for Winds of Winter?
< >
Winds of Winter may be the most highly anticipated nerdy book to come out in the foreseeable future, and now we just might have a release date. Although George R.R. Martin and his publishers have been notoriously tight-lipped about the next GOT installment, but now Amazon France might have spilled the beans.

According to France's Amazon listing for Winds of Winter, the next GOT novel will come out on March 9, 2017. Although there's no verification from any official sources, this would make some sense. Martin said that he was still working on the book last month, but he also said that the end of writing was "months away" in January, which means he could easily be finishing up right about now. Not to mention that the next season of Game of Thrones comes out shortly after, in mid-2017. Especially after Martin famously announced that Winds of Winter wouldn't come out in time for season six, it would stand to reason that everyone involved would want to publish before season seven.

This should all be taken with a grain of salt, of course, since Martin's UK publisher, HarperCollins, said (via EW) "nothing has been finalized regarding the publication or the date," and Amazon has published false dates for past installments of GOT novels before. But still, we can keep our fingers crossed that this rumor isn't entirely baseless, and that we'll be seeing more of the Song of Ice and Fire novels very soon.

UPDATE - 09/07/16 03:41 pm

Random House has issued a statement (via AV Club), stating:

Opening quote
"As his publisher, we support George R.R. Martin as he works hard to finish The Winds Of Winter. Any on-sale dates currently listed online for the novel are incorrect. Once we have a publication date for The Winds Of Winter, the world will know."
Closing quote

So, not only does it look like Winds of Winter doesn't have a publishing date, it sounds like George R.R. Martin hasn't finished writing yet. We can still dream that it will come out next spring, of course, but it remains to be seen.
