New Video Examines Secrets Lurking in the Background of "Children of Men"
< >
Children of Men is a dystopian tour de force, and widely acknowledged as one of the best sci-fi movies of all time (possibly the best one to come out this century). In a new video essay, Youtube user Nerdwriter1, aka Evan Puschak, examines the importance of background in Alfonso Cuaron's masterpiece.

While the film ostensibly takes the perspective of the main character, Clive Owen's Theo, the background is key to building the world around him, and some shots leave his perspective entirely in order to take a more omniscient, philosophizing approach to the dystopian world Cuaron created. As a result, those roving, thoughtful shots that leave Theo's range of vision are not just asides or a filmmaker's muscle-flexing, but are key to sending a larger message about immigration, the lack of empathy for refugees, and ultimately, the dangers of expanding capitalism. So, as Pushak concludes, "don't ignore the background," guys.
